Main economic activities

The Aisne département is an agricultural area: it is France’s leading producer of sugar beet, its second leading producer of wheat and coloured onions, the country’s third leading producer of potatoes and fourth leading producer of carrots.
Agriculture accounts for a yearly turnover of 1 billion euros. Some of the leading brands in the agri-business and food industry have chosen to establish themselves in the Aisne département: Bannette, Bongrain, Danone, Materne, Nestlé, William Saurin, etc.

Nearly 20% of the local workforce are employed in Industry: textiles, motor vehicles, perfumes, glass-making.

The Aisne département is also known for its chemicals industry, with multinationals such as Rohm & Haas and Bayer; luxury goods, with L’Oréal and LVMH-Givenchy; glass-making, with Saint-Gobain, etc.

Some 25,000 locals work in the arts and crafts sector; there are 2,436 construction firms, many of them single tradesmen; 20,700 people are employed in retail and sales.

Last, but not least, the services sector has grown tremendously: more than one in two locals work in services – that’s nearly 100,000 people!
