Aisne: a département of many faces
To the north lies the green patchwork of hedgerows of the Thiérache area, after which the land flattens out to form large cultivated plains criss-crossed by canals in the Vermandois and the Chaunois areas.
A few miles on and one begins to catch glimpses of the imposing outline of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-Laon, rising majestically on its hilltop and watching over the hills of the Laonnois area, which eventually give way to the steep foothills of the plateaux of the Soissonnais area.
To the south, the landscape is dominated by vineyards in the Marne Valley.
